Many wonderful years spent in Cavalier Manor. The people and experiences helped shape who I am today. My family and I moved to "The Manor" in 1965. We were among the first families to move to Warfield Drive. I played in the vacant field now occupied by WC Waters

Hello Cavalier Manor
I like to thanks all the adults who cared to give back to their community during my informative (childhood) years, from 1968 through 1978. I think we all should find a way to give back to our communities, and those who are less fortunate. Kids never forget who gave them a hand up......Harold & Harry Sullivan...............

In the late 70s and early 80s the Cavalier Manor Pool was closed. I was a skinny shy teenager. Darnell Johnson, Linda Cavanaugh and Bill Moore mentored me as I became a lifeguard, opened and eventually managed Cavalier Manor pools as well as several others like Jeffrey Wilson, Effingham, Ada Barber, and Douglas Park. We even had all black swim and dive competitions at the pool. One kid I taught there went on to become a college swimmer. Amazing place! Fond memories. (and some scary ones too)
Ricky Boykins:
Leo- Like you, I too was mentored by Bill and trained as a lifeguard. My experienced began the summer of 1973. I worked 2 summers at the Cavalier Manor Pool. On occasion,I substituted at the Effingham location. Best time of my life.

This website is great. I did not realize there was so much information out here about my old neighborhood-Cavalier Manor. I use to live on Tazwell Street. You probably knew my brothers, Milton, Theodore and Gordon Jennings and my oldest brother, Raymond Jennings still lives in Portsmouth. Reading all the comments make me realize how lucky I was to grow up in such a wonderful community.

I just happened to stumble across this site and it truly is an amazing find. I grew up in good old Cavalier Manor but have been gone for three years now. My concern now is that I have recently heard of the Cavalier Manor Recreational Center is closing the pool. I hope that isn't true.
I am currently a student studying architecture and I have considered making that site my thesis project. I was hoping that if anyone here knows of anyone who I could be in touch with for more information regarding the area, your help would be greatly appreciated. It would be my pleasure to give back to the community what it has given to me so many years ago.

I love this site !! I have to tell more people about it. I too grew up in Cavalier Manor. Born and raised. I attended Cavalier Manor Elementary, Lakeview, Waters Jr. High, Manor High School (freshman Year) and graduated from I.C. Norcom High School. I remember the 7-11 store, the pool and the two big white pillars on the corner of Roosevelt and Cavalier Blvd. It would be great to talk with other people who grew up in the Manor !!

I am a longtime Cavalier Manor resident. My parents moved out to Cavalier Manor back in November 1957 having been living here for over 50 years.
I was raised, grew up in Portsmouth, attended public school and have resided here most of my life.
My mother Mrs. Jean B. Wright was a member of the Police Community Relations (PCR) for many years and drove the Cavalier Manor Patrol car for about a decade (1982-1992). She was a very active and dedicated force in the community. I used to go on patrol with my mother many years ago observing suspicious activity and my mom would report it to authorities.
My mom implemented the slogan “Put Christ first, so Crime won’t last.” Very inspirational!
My mother passed away last year on January 9, 2008. I cannot think of another person who was dedicated to driving that patrol car more than my mother. She is irreplaceable in all aspects and will be greatly missed.
I have not even seen that patrol car driving around at all in quite sometime.
The Cavalier Manor neighborhood seems like it is changing for the worst I would say. We have a different breed of people moving out here now unfortunately.
